CF-SLPs!

First, a big shoutout to you for reaching this next step in your SLP journey! Many long hours of studying, clinical experiences, and hard work have gone into getting here. Now, it is time to put what you have learned into practice!

First and foremost, do not worry. You are going to be okay! It is normal to feel nervous or unsure of yourself. You are not expected to know everything on your first day. Give yourself grace and remember that you are still learning. One of the first steps toward a positive CF experience is finding a position where you feel supported and have room to grow.

Finding the Right CF Position

Making a choice about where you complete your clinical fellowship is a big decision to make.

Take time to consider:

  1. Schedule: Does it support a healthy work-life balance?
  2. Mentorship: Will your mentor be available to answer questions and provide feedback?
  3. Caseload: Who will you be working with, and what are the expectations?
  4. Work environment: Will you feel comfortable asking for help and collaborating with others?

The right support can make a huge difference in your CF experience!

My Experience as a CF-SLP

I have had an amazing CF experience at Sidekick Therapy. From my initial interview phone call, I felt welcomed and supported. The positivity and encouragement I experienced has continued throughout my time as a CF.

One thing I appreciate most is knowing that there is always someone I can turn to or lean on. Whether I need help with documentation, clarification on procedures, or guidance with a clinical situation, I know I can reach out without hesitation. If you need an answer fairly quickly, Sidekick has a comprehensive training platform called "SCOUT" which is a helpful resource for finding answers and navigating unfamiliar processes. It can be a great starting point to help you find the information needed without stress.

The support throughout onboarding and beyond has made a difference as well. Having someone there on your first day makes the transition less intimidating. My mentor and teammates check on my progress, answer questions, and provide feedback to help me grow as a clinician. This support has helped me build confidence in my skills and alleviate any stress or uncertainty.

Advice for CF-SLPs

My biggest pieces of advice are to:

  1. Ask questions: You are not expected to know every answer.
  2. Accept feedback: Use it as an opportunity to grow.
  3. Give yourself grace: Both good and challenging days are part of the process.
  4. Avoid comparison: Everyone has different strengths and grows at their own pace.
  5. Remember your purpose: Focus on doing what is best for your clients.

Remember Why You Started

We have the opportunity to help individuals communicate, express themselves, and connect with others. That is something special! If you are preparing to begin your CF, take a deep breath. You have worked hard to get here, and you deserve to celebrate this accomplishment.

You have made it this far, and this is just the beginning!
