There are many holidays to celebrate during the summer months of June, July, and August. One national holiday that has gained increased recognition in recent years is Juneteenth.

On June 19, 1986- approximately two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation- enslaved African Americans in Texas finally learned that the Civil War had ended and that slavery had been abolished in the United States. The news brought joy and celebrations of freedom began immediately. Those celebrations continue today as communities across the country honor Juneteenth and its significance in American history.

Juneteenth is an important holiday to teach both children and adults about. It provides an opportunity to learn about our country's history while teaching the skills of courage, resilience, bravery, and the strength of the African American community.

Here are a few children books that celebrate the meaning of Juneteenth:

  1. Juneteenth for Mazie by Floyd Cooper.
  2. Jayylen's Juneteenth Surprise by Lavaille Lavette and David Wilkerson.
  3. Let's Celebrate Juneteenth by Tonya Abari and Tabitha Brown.
  4. All Different Now: Juneteenth, The First Day of Freedom by Angela Johnson and E.B. Lewis.
  5. Freedom, We Sing by Amyra Leon and Molly Mendoza.
  6. Juneteenth Is by Natasha Triplett and Daniel J. O'Brien.
  7. They Built Me for Freedom: The Story of Juneteenth and Houston's Emancipation Park by Tonya Ellis Duncan and Jenin Mohammed.

These books are entertaining and meaningful. Make sure to check these books out while celebrating the holiday!
